Joseph W. Coyne, RPh.
President and Chief Executive Officer Coyne Consulting, LLC
Joseph Coyne brings over 25 years of experience as a pharmacy executive specializing in cancer treatment, hospice and homecare support. He has led several organizations through changes of ownership and advancing technologies, personally adapting several automated systems to meet specific pharmacy and clinical needs. He is known as an innovator and enjoys working with clients to provide the structure and process to create breakthrough projects with an eye toward rapid return on investment while achieving improvements to patient care.
Previously, Joe was Enterprise Vice-President of Pharmacy Services for Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA). In this position he was responsible for overseeing the cost of drug budget covering ten CTCA regional pharmacies and its clinical operation spanning the entire country. Joe led the new pharmacy designs, licensing, hiring, training, and the use of data and analytics in innovative ways to advance the practice of Oncology across the entire enterprise. During this time, Joe was able to successfully reduce overall pharmacy costs while improving patient care, as well as patient and employee safety. Working in concert with the system’s healthcare providers, he instituted a number of best practices for prescribed medications as measured against industry benchmarks and internal metrics. Calling on his technology expertise, he oversaw the strategic development of Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) throughout system facilities, Knowledge-Based Medication Administration (KBMA), Electronic Data Warehouse (EDW) and clinical/pharmacy functionality with the Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems in use.
Joe graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and has since served there as Adjunct Senior Clinical Professor and a Clinical Preceptor. He earned certifications for Safe Handling and Preparation of Hazardous Drugs, and NIH’s Human Subject Assurance program. He also received the Compliance Tools and Aseptic Certification for USP . A regular presenter at various meetings, he has also contributed to professional literature. In August 2012, he was presented the Best of Business Intelligence Editor’s Choice Award from Computerworld Magazine. The award-winning project was the creation of an electronic warehouse in collaboration with CTCA’s IT team that allowed the pharmacy to use data in entirely new ways to implement clinical best practices, remove waste from the system and use real time data to make decisions in many areas of pharmacy operations.
Philip J. Schneider, B.Sc., M.Sc.
Clinical Professor, Director of Administrative and Professional Affairs
Philip J. Schneider is clinical professor and associate dean for academic and professional affairs for the University of Arizona, College of Pharmacy at the Phoenix Biomedical campus. In this position, he provides oversight, development and administration of educational initiatives including teaching, service and scholarship activities at the newly created campus. He received a B.Sc. in pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin, M.Sc. in hospital pharmacy from Ohio State University and a certificate of residency from Ohio State University Hospitals.
For more than two decades, Mr. Schneider held pharmacy practice and administrative positions at OSU Medical Center and was responsible for the pharmacy residency program that produced 99 residents during his years as program director. During this time, a nationally recognized program for the reporting and analysis of adverse drug events was developed that led to improvements in the medication-use process at the medical center. This severity scale is now widely used in the health care industry, including serving as the basis for the system used by the United States Pharmacopeia.
During his 38 years of professional and academic service, Mr. Schneider has published more than 170 articles and abstracts in professional and scientific journals, and 38 book chapters. He has edited seven books, and given more than 500 contributed or invited presentations in 21 countries and the United States. He is a past president of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and past president of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), having served for 10 years as the first editor-in-chief of Nutrition in Clinical Practice, one of ASPEN’s official publications. Active in international pharmacy, he is currently chairman of the board of pharmaceutical practice of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), having served as secretary and newsletter editor of the hospital pharmacy section and chairman of the congress planning committee.
E. Clyde Buchanan, M.Sc., R.Ph. FASHP
E. Clyde Buchanan is a pharmacy consultant and recognized expert on compounding sterile preparations and pharmacy planning, budgeting and operations. He is retired from Emory Healthcare in Atlanta where he was senior director of pharmaceutical services. Mr. Buchanan received a B.Sc. in pharmacy from the University of North Carolina, and a M.Sc. and residency training from Ohio State University. Prior to Emory, he held pharmacy leadership positions at Duke University Medical Center and St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. Mr. Buchanan has served the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) as chairman of SIG on administrative practice; vice chair of the Council on Legal and Public Affairs; member of the House of Delegates, as well as several committees and task forces. Mr. Buchanan has edited and authored four books on sterile compounding and numerous manuscripts and book chapters. He has been a frequent speaker for state and national conferences on USP Chapters.
